HAY! Straws®

Our Original HAY! Straws® are made from the stem of the wheat plant, a by-product of wheat production. Wheat is typically grown for its grain, which gets made into flour and other food products. Once the wheat plant reaches maturity and turns golden yellow, the grain is harvested off. The wheat stems get cut and made into things like hay for animal feed and the rest is tossed away and burned.

Our Jumbo's are made from reed. Common reeds' rapid ability to spread and take over fragile salt marsh ecosystems makes it an invasive species in several parts of the world.

The reed is harvested by farmers for several reasons. For example, the stems are being used for thatching of roofs. Excess reed is often burned to ashes.

With our products, farmers can get an extra income from the waste product instead of burning them and polluting the ecological system.

Our Original and Jumbo straws come in different sizes. Pick one which suits you best!

Original Cocktail -- (13cm, Ø3,5-5mm)

Original Tall -- (20cm, Ø3,5-5mm)

Original XXL -- (24cm, Ø3,5-5mm)

Jumbo Martini -- (15cm, Ø5-7.5mm)

Jumbo -- (20cm, Ø5-7,5mm)

Jumbo XL -- (20cm, Ø7,5-10mm)

Jumbo XXL -- (25cm, Ø7,5-10mm)

Boba -- (20cm, Ø10-13mm)

Due to the fact the straws are 100% natural, there are never two the same. Each box contains straws with mixed diameters in the specified range. It is unfortunately not possible to deliver one specific diameter.

Our Originals and Jumbo's are great with cocktails, lemonades, tap water, gin tonics, other alcoholic drinks.

The martini Jumbo and normal Jumbo are great as well with these kind of drinks. They are even better with fresh juices, juiced cocktails, smoothies and crushed ice drinks.

If you fancy a soft drink or milkshake like drink you'd better go for the Jumbo XL. They are really the bomb in sucking power!

For tapioca tea or bubble tea you definitely want to try our Boba. This real sucker is really one of a kind.

Our straws are 100% natural, therefor straws are never the same, because of naturally occurring variance in the plant.

Our Original straws are made out of wheat and may feel a bit brittle at first. So don't squeeze or pinch them at the beginning. Just gently put them in your drink, after you have drunk a liquid through it a few times, the material becomes more flexible and less fragile. This has to do with the natural cell structure of the product.

Our Jumbo family is made out of reed, more resilient and do not break easily. This is because of the thicker wall and wider diameter.

Enjoy!

For home usage the Originals as well as the Jumbo family can be used more then once. They won't get soggy, just rinse them with water. You even can let them dry for over day usage.

Within hospitality we recommend using the straws for single use only. This because of regulations and hygienic reasons. The straws cannot be put in the dishwasher to clean them safely from viruses and bacteria, for example.

Yes, our HAY! Straws® can be used in hot and cold beverages and unlike paper, they don't get soggy. Our straws are naturally water resistant so it holds up well in liquids over time.

Yes, our straws are gluten free. Our Original Straws are made from the stem of a wheat plant, which typically doesn't contain gluten (that's in the grain). To be sure our customers are safe we test each batch of our straws for gluten. We are happy to report our results are negative or undetectable. The gluten Free Organization's standards for a food or product to be gluten free is under 10ppm, which ours is.

Our straws are 100% natural and compostable. So even if they end up in nature, they serve as nutrients for the Earth. Recent official independent tests revealed our straws compost within 42 days just in soil. Great isn't it?

Our straws are packaged in unbleached kraft boxes which are printed with soy-based inks. Of course we deliver our straws in a plastic-free packaging.

Hay and grass allergens can vary person to person, and everybody is different. If you suffer from severe allergies to hay or grass we recommend you consult your doctor or allergist before using HAY! Straws®.

Our HAY! Straws® are non GMO. Almost all wheat grown in the world is non GMO because wheat varieties can be naturally breed and does not require genetic modification to achieve desired results.

Yes they are. The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) has fully recognised the natural origin of our sustainable straws and awarded us the label 100% biobased!

Recently we passed the EU migration test (Commission Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011). This makes us fully EU and USDA certified. Our reed straws are even ISO 22000 certified.

No! Certainly not. Our straws are pure nature. No chemicals, bleaching agents, coatings or additives are added before, during or after the manufacturing process.

Our straws are 100% natural and do not contain any coatings or waxes. They can be placed in backyard compost bins or can be composted through municipal facilities, by placing in a food scraps or compostable bin.  Essentially it's like putting hay or straw in the compost.

Recent study by an independent research facility revealed our natural straws compost within 42 days!

Yes, we have resale pricing available in our 15, 50 and 100 pack sizes. If interested contact us at hello@strawz.eu.

Our wholesale prices are competitive and comparable to buying good quality paper straws. Our original Straws are around three cents per piece, paper is often priced at over four cents a piece and our straws won't go Soggy. The Jumbo family, much more resilient starts around 9 cents a straw. Compared to bamboo a lot cheaper.

Bio plastic / PLA or corn-starch straws are cheaper but as of 3 July 2021 prohibited in all EU countries. Keep in mind they are only commercially compostable in the right facility and unfortunately at the moment compost sorting facilities are not able to detect the difference between a bioplastic and a plastic straw, so despite your best intentions, these will likely end up in landfills.

HAY! Straws® are your best choice for price, performance and compostability.
